Calhoun Chief Deputy Sheriff Justin D. Smith has resigned his position, reportedly to a take a position as a probation officer.

Smith started his career with the Calhoun Sheriffs Department in 2008.

In 2008 he said, "It feels good to be helpful," having pursued education in psychology and criminal justice, and obtaining a degree in those areas after attending Salem and Glenville colleges.

He was a graduate of the WV State Police Academy.

He was likely the first deputy in the county with a college degree.

"I've always wanted to be in public service," he said.

Smith had previously worked for Westbrook Mental Health as a case manager and was employed by North Bend State Park. He had been a whitewater raft guide for a number of years.

Smith, a Calhoun High graduate with the Class of 1997, lives on Sycamore with his wife and children.
