CRAIGO GOES DOWN - Capito Wins Easily, GOP Gains Seven Senate Seats In Legislature

(11/06/2002)
In America's most expensive congressional race, incumbent Shelly Moore Capito (R) kept her seat, easily defeating Jim Humphreys (D) 96,669 to 64,457. It was a campaign which reached new heights with negative political ads.

One of West Virginia's most powerful politicians Democrat Oshel Craigo went down to defeat in yesterday's general election. Lisa Smith (R) defeated the 20-year veteran and chairman of the House Finance Committee 18,047 to 14,289. Craigo told reporters he would never run again.

The GOP picked up seven seats in the West Virginia legislature, with the balance of power still in the hands of Democrats 68-32.
