If you remember the many years of old-time music making by Melvin Wine, you will enjoy the Melvin Wine Birthday Concert at the Landmark Studio for the Arts this Saturday, April 18 at 7 p.m.

The evening will be an "open mic" format and musicians wishing to take part will be given stage time.

The concert is in memory of Melvin Wine, an Appalachian Fiddler from Braxton County who was honored in 1991 as a NEA National Heritage Fellow at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

The show will be emceed by Gerald (Gerry) Milnes, who started the 12 Birthday concerts.

Milnes is a well-known fiddler, historian, author and retired from the Augusta Heritage Center at Davis and Elkins College. He spent many years with Melvin Wine and other WV musicians and coordinated the WV Folk Arts Apprenticeship program for students and "old time" musicians to share their talents and tunes, and folk artists to teach their traditional crafts.

The doors will open at 6:00 for musicians to visit and renew old friendships.

The Landmark Studio will take admission donations at the door which will be used to support a stipend or small scholarship for a student of traditional music.

If you cannot attend and would like to donate to help a student, you can send a check to: Landmark Studio for the Arts at PO Box 74, Sutton WV 26601.

The event honors many regional musicians such as Sara Singleton, Wilson Douglas, Phoeba Parsons, Phyllis Marks, Lester McCumbers and many others who contributed to their culture and communities with their music.
