HEMLOCKS MAY BE DOOMED IN REGION - Aphids Killing The Trees In 18 States

(11/05/2002)
Another critter is invading the West Virginia forest. The Woolly Adelgid has spread across the northeastern US, munching on the sap of eastern and Carolina hemlocks.

The mighty hemlocks at Cathedral State Park in Preston County, most over 100 feet tall, are currently in danger, and there are problems in Blackwater Falls State Park.

The aphid has spread to 18 states.

Control measures and sprays have proved ineffective and experts fear the hemlocks in the region may be lost.
