WV HOUSE VOTES TO CHANGE PREVAILING WAGE LAW

45,000 WORKERS WAGES REDUCED

After three hours of debate, the House of Delegates passed Senate Bill 361, which would change West Virginia's prevailing wage rate, by a vote of 56-39.

Although the proposed measure has passed both chambers, it will be sent back to the Senate for approval of the changes made by the House.

The proposed measure would require a new calculation of the prevailing wage formula and would allow WorkForce West Virginia, along with economists from Marshall University and West Virginia University, to assist with determining prevailing wage rates. Before any action could be taken, the newly calculated wage would be sent to the joint committee of government and finance for review. The current cap is for projects between $25,000 and $500,000.00.

Opponents of the bill said it would reduce workers' current prevailing wages. Delegate Patsy Trecost, D-Harrison, said there are currently about 45,000 prevailing wage workers ...
