CALHOUN SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES SUPERINTEDENTS BOARD OFFICE RE-ORGANIZATION - Contensious Facility Use Policy Dropped, Spring Break Cancelled

(02/28/2015)
The Calhoun Board of Education has approved Calhoun Superintendent Tim Woodward's administrative reorganization of the county board office, calling for the reduction of 1.5 positions, with one board member Jackie Collins-Frail opposing.

While those changes call for consolidating or establishing new positions, including an assistant school superintendent, Woodward says the restructuring will save about $55,000 annually.

Individuals affected by the plan have filed grievances.

The school board has moved on cancelling Spring Break, related to a large number of school days cancelled due to inclement weather.

Students will be required to attended school for additional days in June to satisfy the 180 day requirement for instructional days.

A contentious policy change recommended by Woodward regarding the use of Calhoun school facilities after-hours has been dropped by the Calhoun Board of Education.

The initial policy and its amended version called for considerable charges to associated athletic groups that wanted to use the school gyms after hours.

Woodward initiated the policy as part of his $1.1 million dollar reduction of the systems $1.8 million deficit.

The school system will, however, require a $30 per hour fee for custodial services to outside groups using school facilities.

Woodward says the county's $1.8 deficit should be re-mediated within five years.
