COURTHOUSE FLAGS STOLEN - A Halloween Incident

(10/30/2002)
The large 12' x 18' American flag which was displayed shortly after September 11, 2001 has been stolen from the flagpole at the Calhoun Courthouse, along with the WV state flag. County Clerk Richard Kirby, said it was apparently a Halloween-related incident.

"Lots of people commented on the flag, how it 'flew' in the wind," he said.

Kirby said flags were missing when courthouse employees reported to work Tuesday morning. He said the rope had been cut.

"This is the first time this has happened in my memory," said Kirby, who reported the flags cost $400. He said donations are being made to purchase new flags.

Kirby also reported a Halloween display at the triangle in Grantsville erected by Cub Scouts was also destroyed.

A report was made to the Grantsville Police Department.
