SOUTHERN CALHOUN MT. ZION PSD WATER CUSTOMERS STILL UNDER BOIL WATER ADVISORY

(02/13/2015)
A boil water advisory issued in Nov. 2014 by the Mt. Zion PSD for parts of their water system is still in effect, reportedly related to engineering or construction problems.

The advisory said, "The Mt. Zion PSD is unable to maintain chlorine levels required by the WV State OEHS due to unresolved telemetry problems emanating from issues with the engineering construction firm," according to a news release.

The boil water advisory has been for customers extending from Rt. 16 about a mile south of Arnoldsburg "Y" to the Upper West Fork Park, Rt. 16.

The boil water advisory was issued related to inadequate disinfection of water.

Routine monitoring in November showed inadequate disinfection for drinking water. Disinfection is used to destroy harmful microbes that can be in drinking water. Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, or other symptoms and may pose special health risks for children and some elderly with compromised immune systems, said the PSD.

The PSD is working with EHS, USDA, and Boyles and Hildreth engineers to address telemetry functioning, chlorine residual maintenance and monitoring reporting, according to the advisory.

In a January PSD board meeting, according to the minutes, there was a continued discussion regarding the chlorination issue with the involvement of the WV Rural Water Association and the Office of Environmental Health Services, in efforts to meet state guidelines for chlorine levels in that part of the system.

That report said there is chlorine in that section requiring the boiling of water, but it cannot be maintained at required levels consistently, due to the placement and design (of the the system), related to the construction of a re-clorinator.

The Mt. Zion PSD is reportedly seeking grant money to correct the construction problems.
