UPDATE 8/28/2015 - A Special Grand Jury has indicted Kevin Putnam, 45, on a murder charge in Weston. He will appear in court in Lewis County August 31 at 1:00 p.m.

UPDATE 2/21/2015 - A Lewis County man accused of murder has been denied bail.

Attorneys for Kevin Putnam asked Judge Jacob Reger to release Putnam from jail.

They acknowledged the seriousness of the crime and suggested the bail be significant.

Prosecutor Christy Flanigan said Putnam's family had concerns for his safety and theirs, and asked Reger to deny the request.

Putnam remains in the Central Regional Jail.

UPDATE - Probable cause was found in a Lewis County murder case, where a man killed his brother.

. Kevin Putnam's case is now headed to circuit court.

The Lewis County Magistrate Court heard testimony from the Lewis County Sheriff's Department and a woman who was with the Putnam brothers at the time of the shooting.

According to her testimony, Kevin's brother, Jarod, came to their parents' house, started an argument, and allegedly started punching Kevin Putnam.

She said Kevin Putnam went upstairs, allegedly grabbed a rifle, and shot his brother in the chest.

Putnam is scheduled for a bail hearing next Thursday.

ORIGINAL STORY - A Lewis County man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his brother near the Lewis-Braxton county line.

Kevin Lane Putnam, 44, of Ireland, has been charged with the murder that occurred Monday night near the community of Ireland, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

When officers arrived they found Stephen Jerod Putnam laying on the living room floor on his side, unresponsive. He was transported to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

State Police interviewed Kevin Putnam and according to the criminal complaint, "he and the victim had gotten into an altercation in the living room of the residence."

He told officers that "he had retreated from the victim and had gone into a bedroom located on the top floor of the residence where he retrieved a .22 caliber rifle."

He walked back toward where his brother was located in the hallway and fired two rounds.

One round hit Stephen in the chest and the other round was embedded in the wall, according to the complaint.

Kevin, according to the complaint, continued to tell officers that he then called 911 and told dispatch that his brother had shown up at the residence with a gunshot wound.

He is currently being held in the Central Regional Jail without bond.
