HOW COLD WAS IT AT FROZEN WV THURSDAY? - Calhoun Schools 2-Hour Delay Friday, Temp To Drop Friday Night To 4 Degrees

(01/09/2015)

Frozen resident Bryan Hastewell checks the chilly temperature

Calhoun County has a great place-name for frigid weather - Frozen.

Was it cold enough to to freeze the anatomy off a witches chest? Or something about a brass monkey?

The Thursday morning temperature (1/8/2015) was -2 degrees, according to Bryan and Jan Hastewell, the Herald's official weather reporters from downtown Frozen WV.

The temperature on Jan. 7, 2014 was at -6 degrees, a "polar vortex" day.

Friday the temperature will rise to about 26 degrees and then fall to about 4 degrees Friday night.

Saturday nights low about 12 degrees, with Sunday's temperature rising to 44 degrees.

Hastewell, an Australian native who married Frozen resident Jan Schartiger, has lived in the remote hollow for a number of years.

Frozen once had a post office and stores and was traversed by the early 1900s Bear Fork Railroad that hauled barrel staves to the Elk River.

Frozen postmaster William H. Hunt said in the 1930s, "Some very early pioneers came here on this creek and killed and skinned a buffalo and had to wrap up in the green skin to keep warm (from freezing to death). When the fire burned down the man had to be pulled out of the skin, nearly frozen and had to be thawed out."

There are numerous photos and stories about the community on the Hur Herald.
