CALHOUN OPENS SEASON WITH WIN OVER RITCHIE

Calhoun placed four players in double figures as it opened the 2014-15 basketball season with a 59-55 victory over visiting Ritchie County Tuesday night.

The Red Devils, 1-0, were led by Ethyn Miller with 13 while Tyler Sims and Dylan Heiney had 11 each and Sam Brady 10.

The game was close throughout with neither team being able to take much of a lead. However, the Red Devils did outscore the Rebels, 0-1, by four in the third quarter to take a lead it never relinquished.

With Ritchie leading by one, 27-26, at the half the Red Devils got four each from Heiney and Brady to outscore the Rebels 13-9 to take the lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth Miller was outstanding with nine points as Calhoun enjoyed a 20-19 advantage setting the final score.

The Red Devils' quarter of double figure scorers had help as Tyler Gerwig added eight, Luke Sheldon six and Lucas Wilson two. Zack Yanero and Austin Gribble played but did not score.

William Baker and Dakota Jarvis did not play.

For Ritchie Riley Allen had a game high 20 points while Seth Cottrell added 15 and A.J. Collins 12. Also scoring for the Rebels were Jayden Allender with fiveDylan Beall with two and Dustin Miller with one. Ritchie won the junior varsity game, 40-33, despite a valiant Calhoun effort.

Caden Hicks led Calhoun, 0-1, with 10 while Ben Frederick added eight, Ross Vineyard six, Chris Carter five and Sonny Wilson and James Washington two apiece. Chris Kirkland, Kaleb Nicholas and Jaron Hall did not play.

Ritchie County, 1-0, had a game high 15 points from Shane Davis while Chase Sullivan added 10. Ryan Morton had six while Cody Kaplan added four, Jarrett Spencer and Connor Emsinger had two and Brenton McGuire had one.

Calhoun returns to action Thursday night with a home doubleheader with Wirt County.
