DEER KILL DOWN BECAUSE OF BUMPER MAST CROP

(12/06/2014)
The Calhoun deer kill, according to preliminary figures, is down for the 2014 gun season.

Jeff McCready, the DNR's game biologist for the Parkersburg region, said the agency will not release the official numbers until January, although he acknowledged reports indicate the kill is down.

According to local check-in stations, the buck kill was down about 50% the first week.

McCready said the decline is likely due to a bumper mast crop. "They're just staying in the woods and eating and then bedding down."

Local hunters say fewer out-of-state hunters seem to be returning to the county to hunt deer.
