(11/06/2014)
HARRISON-TAYLOR CO. INCIDENT. - John Edward Simpson III, 31, is accused of stabbing Michael Whitehair and Theresa Jones multiple times at their home in Grafton, according to court documents.

Whitehair was holding a child when the incident happened. Both Whitehair and Jones were flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital and the child was transported to Grafton City Hospital for evaluation, said Harrison County 911.

Whitehair did not have a pulse when he was loaded into a medical helicopter Tuesday night, said Taylor County EMS.

Following the stabbing, Simpson fled from the scene and was later apprehended.

Court documents indicated that the stabbing occurred following a dispute between Simpson and Whitehair related to a separate incident being investigated by law enforcement.

Simpson is charged with two counts of malicious assault from the Taylor County incident and was charged with first offense DUI and fleeing by Bridgeport Police. Simpson had several outstanding warrants including domestic battery, third offense shoplifting, and gas drive off, according to officials.

BURGLAR SHOT AND KILLED - A burglar may have taken one chance too many in Kanawha County. Kanawha County Sheriff's Department deputies said a man was shot and killed when he broke into a home on Campbell's Creek Drive around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"This was the second burglary that has occurred at the residence in the last 24 hours," said Kanawha County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Cpl. Brian Humphreys.

"Additional stolen property was found across the street on a walking path not too far from the home. There's been a string of burglaries in this area of Campbell's Creek the sheriff's department has been investigating the last couple of days."

During Tuesday's break-in, the homeowner was not at home. He returned to his home late Tuesday night to discover he'd been robbed and a lot of his property was missing. He told neighbors he planned to report the break-in to authorities on Wednesday morning.

During the early morning hours, the homeowner tells authorities he heard a noise in his garage and went to investigate. The two got into a fight and the intruder was shot dead.

Humphreys said investigators are operating under the assumption the homeowner fired the fatal shot in self defense.

The stolen property discovered across the road was taken Wednesday morning, which indicated it was at least the burglar's second trip into the home when he was confronted and killed.
