Calhoun Middle High School hosted the CWVAC Volleyball Tournament Saturday, which included seven total teams in the sport of volleyball. These schools include Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Geary, Spencer, Summersville, and Walton.

B team News

CMS has had a very successful season in volleyball this year for both A and B teams. The B team is undefeated with a record of 13-0. In addition to this impressive record, the team has beat all opponents in the first two sets and has not had to play a third deciding match. The B team is very promising for a successful season next year as well after two years of winning records and players that have a lot of game experience.

A Team Recap

The A team has made a drastic turnaround since being winless last season, to being one of the top three powerhouses in the conference this year. Calhoun was ranked third going into Saturday's competition with a conference record of 9-3.

Calhoun vs. Walton (25-10, 25-22, 25-18)

The first opponent of the day was Walton for Calhoun. After two wins during the regular season against this team, Calhoun was prepared for this opponent. With a group effort of all 19 players, Calhoun pulled off the win vs. Walton to move on to the semifinals versus Braxton. This game's key players included Aaliyah Falls with 11 aces in the match and Madison Dennis scoring 6 points and leading the back row with returning serves.

Calhoun vs. Braxton (25-18, 25-12)

After recovering from game 1, Calhoun faced Braxton in the semifinals and was very determined to win against this opponent considering the heartbreaking 32-30, 3rd set loss to this team for Calhoun during the regular season, Calhoun really displayed all of the fundamentals in this game including game changing blocks and finding gaps in Braxton's defense to send the ball away from the opponents hands. Key player' s in this game included Brandee Allen with 11 points in the match, 3 aces, and Paige Mangus with 4 aces. All of the ladies really used good communication and leadership skills in the match to ensure a victory and a spot in the finals.

Calhoun vs. Summersville (25-23, 25-22)

As the score reflects, this was a conference final competition between two very good teams that wanted the trophy and fought to the end to bring the trophy home with their team. The scores changed constantly through these sets and a guaranteed winner in the beginning of the game based on scores was not a number to rely on. The key players in this game included Alexa Lawson with 8 points, 2 aces, and back row returns and digs to change the game's tempo for Calhoun's benefit. Jordan Ferrell led the front row in this game with blocks, spikes, and leading her team in setting up to defend on every play. Shaylah Wilson assisted with serving in this game including 6 points on the day.

The girls were ecstatic after the championship game was over and the reality of the hard work and time and dedication put in to this program finally has paid off.

All Conference selections for this year include: Aaliyah Falls and Erika Neweill.

All tournament team selections for this year include: Shaylah Wilson and Jabowa Dennis.
