(10/22/2014)
Joan Marian Satterfield, 64, of Grantsville, West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, October 18th at Bethesda West Hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida, after a long battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

She was born on June 26th, 1950, in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, to Marion General Whisman and Elah Starcher Whisman.

She attended Calhoun County High School and graduated in 1968. Upon graduation, she worked for Kellwood in Spencer, Wv, for 6 years sharing an apartment with her closest friends and beloved sister.

She was employed by the WV Department of Highways for 34 years as Secretary and County Administrator. She was among a select few female WV Department of Highway workers who rose to the position of county administrator before retiring in 2007.

She enjoyed cooking, reading, traveling, sitting on the balcony overlooking the ocean at her Sarasota home, watching The Voice, and spending time with family, friends and grandchildren.

She was a gentle, loving soul who began cooking at the age of 8. Among the things she was known for was her smile, legendary biscuits and gravy, faith in God, and searching out new eateries (or, hole-in-the-wall establishments) near and far.

Joan Satterfield is preceded in death by her father, Marion Whisman and mother, Elah Whisman.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Satterfield of Grantsville; sister, Twila Roach of Parkersburg, WV; son, Chad Satterfield of Weston, WV; daughter, Tia Satterfield of Sarasota, FL; "part-time daughter", Laura Waugh of Phoenix, Arizona; four nieces; two nephews; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Mt. Zion, WV on Saturday, October 25th at noon.

Funeral service will be held at Mt. Zion Church following visitation at 4:00 p.m. with Reverend Rick Swearengin officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Stump Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Mt. Zion Church, Enon Baptist Church, Jerry and Doris Riggs, Stewart and Mickey Satterfield, Bum and Patty Kendall, Eric Boone, Kelly Goff, Christopher Staine, Sue Roberts, Talia Markham, Rick Swearengin, and family and friends for support and prayers over the years.
