"PROMISE" COULD OFFER TECH SCHOLARSHIPS - Would Require $800,000 In Funding

(10/15/2002)
The Promise Scholarship is considering expanding its offerings. The Promise Board is looking at a new scholarship, which if implemented would be called the Promise Tech Scholarship.

Director Robert Morgenstern says other states are offering a scholarship to students who want to attend 2 year technical schools. He says the same scholarship could be instrumental in attracting students to careers that are in shortage now. Morgenstern says such careers include those that require an engineering background or some type of health care.

Morgenstern says if the scholarship were offered more students would attend school in the state and ultimately filter into the careers we have shortages in. He says right now Promise scholars are able to use their scholarships at community and technical schools but by offering the Promise Tech scholarship they'll be reaching even more students.

Morgenstern says nothing is definite yet; they're still in the exploring stages. He says in order to make the scholarship a reality they would need an additional $800,000 in funding.
