DOMESTIC DISPUTE ALLEGEDLY LED TO ARSON OF SPENCER BUILDING

(09/13/2014)
A domestic dispute allegedly led to an arson charge lodged against Spencer resident 21-year-old Jacob Hite, following last Saturday night's fire in downtown Spencer.

Hite was charged by officials from the West Virginia Fire Marshal's office, and is being held in Central Regional Jail, bail is set at $210,000.

Spencer Newspapers reported that Hite, his wife and an 8-month-old son were living in the second story of the building.

Hite's wife allegedly told investigators the couple was having an argument while she was gathering some clothes to leave, after which Hite allegedly grabbed her work shirt and used a cigarette lighter to set it on fire, then tossed it on a pile of clothes, which ignited.

The woman reportedly told investigators she tried to put out the fire without success and then grabbed the baby, fleeing the building. The child was treated for minor burns to the leg. Hite was also treated for burns to the hands.
