CALHOUN MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT - Woman Alleges She Was Held Captive

A Big Bend resident, Brian Smith, 28, has been charged by State Police Cpl. J. B. Hunt with second degree sexual assault and unlawful assault, following a complaint that alleges a female victim had been held captive and assaulted several times in an apartment at Bramblewood Village.

The complaint was first reported by the victim's ex-husband.

In the criminal complaint, Grantsville Police Chief Andy Walker said the woman has been sexually assaulted by her boyfriend Smith multiple times.

The victim, according to the complaint, told authorities Smith was going to kill her by shooting her in the head with a gun, saying she was unable to leave, with "any attempt to leave the residence result(ing) in extreme violence."

The victim had several injuries on her body consistent with her statement, and bruising on her head and face.

The complaint says when officers went to Smith's location and found him, he was unable to respond because of intoxication.

Smith, according to the complaint, admitted to having a sexual relationship with the woman, indicating the couple had been involved in an assault.

Smith has also been charged with an unrelated incident, the possession of marijuana more than 15 grams.

On August 13, Trooper David C. Moore and Calhoun Sheriff Carl Ballengee, while doing a walk-through of Smith's residence at Big Bend with his permission, discovered a gallon-sized zip-lock bag of the controlled substance.

Smith is being held in Central Regional Jail $45,000 bail.
