COMMISSION MONITORING FRONTIER'S LAND-LINE FIX IN BIG SPRINGS - Company Seeking Land For Housing Project

The Calhoun Commission is continuing to monitor Frontier's commitment to replace a dysfunctional sub-station at Big Springs, which has caused intermittent land line service to customers in that area for three years.

The commission filed an official complaint with the WV-Public Service Commission regarding the matter.

Frontier reported on August 1 that they have been slightly delayed starting the fix.

Dianne Ludwig with the Little Kanawha Development Corporation said a company is interested in purchasing 5-acres of land Mt. Zion south for a housing project.

Ludwig said interested parties should contact her.

The commission went into executive session regarding long-standing accountability problems with the former Calhoun County EMS, regarding the collection and distribution of the agencies assets. The commission has been pro-active in trying to obtain records, so far with no success.

A "Night Sky Stargazing" weekend is set for Calhoun Park Sept. 19- Sept. 21 for amateur astronomers to help develop a plan for the development of the park as an east coast stargazing center.

The commission approved the payment of a $403 water bill to the town of Grantsville for the month of June for water used by groups at Wayne Underwood Field.

Accepted the resignations of Shauna Yeager and Kevin Boak, and approved the hiring of Robert Nicholas as the courthouse custodian.

Approved the request of Sheriff Carl Ballengee to sell at auction a number of used cruisers at public auction.

The vehicles to be auctioned, 2002 Mercury Mountaineer, 2003 Mercury Mountaineer, and two 2002 Ford Explorers. The auction date will be published.

Heard a request from Calhoun librarian Amy Norman for $2,000 for matching money for state library funding, action deferred.

Ludwig said Ralph Cunningham is developing a lot at the Calhoun Industrial Park for his business.

Ludwig reported on issues regarding the repair of the courthouse boilers used for heating, being they are 40-years-old.

OES/911 Director Kathy Wood issued a monthly activity report related to 911 calls, and Flood Plain Coordinator Julie Sears reported about recent training she had received regarding flood plain ordinances.

Minnie Hamilton OES Director Brett Wellman reported on the activity of ambulance service, saying "the call patterns remain about the same," MMHS-EMS responding to 104 calls from all stations in July.

Kevin Helmick was appointed to the RC&D board.
