Sammy Ray Douglas, 66 - Clendenin

Sammy Ray Douglas, 66, of Clendenin, formerly of Ivydale, entered into rest with the Lord on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston, following a long illness and surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Hester I. (Bragg) Douglas; and brother, Clarence Douglas.

Sammy, a Vietnam War Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient, attended the Clendenin Advent Christian Church. He worked at the Union Carbide Mines at Sanderson and for Halliburton Services before retiring from WVDOT. Sammy loved to fish off his dock in the Elk River and spend time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, riding his four-wheeler, restoring/collecting antique clocks and finding/collecting Indian artifacts.

Sammy is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sandra Kay (Starcher) Douglas; son, Aaron Douglas and wife, Amanda, of Elkview; daughter, Angela Vickers and husband Daniel, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Elaina Vickers, Abriella Vickers, Andrew Douglas; brother, Carroll Douglas of Ivydale; sisters, Genelle Flippin and husband Paul, of Renick, Margaret DeLashmet and husband, Howell, of Kenansville, Fla., Evelyn Boone of Elm City, N.C.; and a host of other family, friends and neighbors.

Sammy's funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin with Pastor Mike Todorovich and Pastor Nicky Bird officiating and American Legion Post #61 performing military rites. Burial will be at Coen Cemetery in Nebo. His family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the funeral home.
