ROANE AIRPORT WILL BE STUDIED - $100,00 Grant Will Decide On Feasibility

(09/27/2002)
A $100,000 federal aviation grant has been issued to study the possibility of improving a Roane County airport, according to Roane County Economic Development Director Mark Whitley. The airport could become "a first-class facility."

The current airport is privately own by Roane resident Harry Boggs, who continues to develop the area's only airport. Boggs and his family are working on extending the runway from 3,000 to 4,800 feet, but say they would welcome selling the airport for expanded community use.

The grant will study the feasibility of developing the facility, which could take a year. The Roane airport project has taken many turns over the years, including former Gov. Arch Moore doing a ribbon cutting on the project.
