CAMC TRAUMA STATUS BACK TUESDAY - Officials Considering New Law For ER Doctors

(09/26/2002)
Governor Bob Wise announced Charleston Area Medical Center's status as a Level I Trauma Center will receive provisional status on October 1.

The hospital lost trauma status a few weeks ago because they did not have enough orthopedic surgeons to cover trauma admissions.

CAMC serves a broad section of West Virginia, including Calhoun, Roane, Clay and Braxton counties, in addition to nearly all of southern West Virginia.

Most trauma cases in Calhoun have been air-lifted to the center for the past several years.

Gov. Wise said a group will suggest legislation which would include the "Good Samaritan" law, to protect those who deliver trauma care. Wise's plan also calls for $4 million dollars to be placed in Medicaid for trauma care.

Dr. William Ramsey, medical director of the Office of Emergency Medical Services, said Gov. Wise "really made it happen." Staff and employees cheered the governor during a tour yesterday.

"CAMC is back in business Tuesday as a Trauma Center," said Wise.
