A special Earth Day project was announced Thursday for the Pleasant Hill PSD District, held at the Pleasant Hill UM Church.

The Pleasant Hill Public Service District is receiving a loan of $415,000 and grant of $1,000,000 to partially finance the extension of water service to approximately 42 additional households within the Leaf Bank, Upper Back Fork and Leading Creek areas of Calhoun County.

Funding will also be used to replace 8,200 feet of deteriorating water main that has long created outage problems.

PSD chairperson Dale Cunningham said, "Not only will this bring water to some new households, but it will fix some longtime problems that have caused outages."

USDA Rural Development state director Bobby Lewis (right) recognized the Pleasant Hill PSD for its efforts to provide clean, dependable and affordable drinking water.

"Earth Day reminds us of the critical role USDA can play in confronting the challenges of our nation's natural resources, but also the commitment and dedication with everyone associated with the Pleasant Hill PSD, the Calhoun Commission and residents of the community," Lewis said.

Calhoun County was included as one of 29 StrikeForce counties identified by USDA in West Virginia to leverage USDA and partner's resources to increase economic opportunities in areas of persistent poverty.
