Joshia B. "Joe" Carpenter, 84 - Nitro

(04/24/2014)
Joshia B. "Joe" Carpenter, 84, of Nitro WV, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 23, 2014, at his home after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

Joe was born April 26, 1929, to the late Greely and Marie Brennan Carpenter.

After graduating from Calhoun County High School in 1947, Joe went on to join the United States Air Force, where he was a mechanic while in Korea. He also took jet plane exhibits to fairs and festivals, which is where he met his first wife, Betty, and they had one son.

After leaving the Air Force he took a job for Union Carbide, where he became shift supervisor and retired after 39 years. He then went on to several adventures, including driving an ambulance for a funeral home in Charleston and delivering real estate magazines out of his Volkswagen.

After the passing of Betty, on a walk through his neighborhood, he met his second wife, Lois, in 2001. Joe loved to tell stories, many especially on his military background, of which he was proud. If you missed it the first time, he made sure you heard it the second time around, and so on. Now all his stories are heartwarming memories, for all he has left behind to cherish and to remind us of what a wonderful and proud man Joe really was. He will be loved and truly missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Lois; son, Richard and his wife, Barbra; stepson, Jason Brown; grandchildren, Josh and Rachael; sisters, Eva May Hosey and Murial McCormick; brothers, Jack Carpenter, Gaily Carpenter, Joseph Glenn Carpenter and Harry Carpenter; and also many friends.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Chaplain Pete Thompson officiating. Entombment will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with full military honors.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
