Firemen battle blaze on rough terrain

Several Roane County fire departments responded to a forest fire on Lewis Station Road in the Clio area, off US 119 near the Roane-Kanawha county line.

Firefighters from Reedy, Walton, Newton, Clover, Spencer, Pinch and Clendenin, brought the fire under control after burning 15 acres.

Firemen were challenged with steep hillsides and rock cliffs, and one Walton VFD suffered from exhaustion, but is recovering.

Robert Bauer, Reedy Fire Chief, said the heat, wind, and rough terrain made battling the flames a challenge.

Roane 911 dispatched the departments shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.

Firemen were on scene for several hours.

According to numbers released by the state Division of Forestry on Monday, 617 fires have burned 7,493.7 acres, with a lack of rainfall and higher temperatures this week.

The National Weather Service has alerted state residents about the extreme high risk for fires.
