MOMENTS IN TIME: Couple Drown at Creston in 1914

(07/09/2026)
Transcribed by Norma Knotts Shaffer from microfilm of the Calhoun Chronicle dated 2/5/1914.

Terrible Tragedy at Creston

Word was received here Sunday of an awful catastrophe which occurred at Creston Thursday of last week in which Mr. And Mrs. Orville Hopkins, who resided a short distance below Creston on the river, were both drowned.  They were out in their motor boat for a pleasure trip, when in some manner the store of gasolene in the boat caught fire and the couple jumped to save themselves from being burned.  Mr. Hopkins was a first-class swimmer, but in his efforts to save his wife he was carried along to the bottom of the river with her.  The bodies were recovered early this week and that of Mr. Hopkins was buried at Burning Springs and that of his wife was taken to Parkersburg for burial.
