Nina R. Simmons Whipkey, 92 - formerly of Nobe

Nina R. Simmons Whipkey, 92, of Parkersburg, formerly of Nobe, West Virginia passed away at home on Sunday, March 23, 2014.

She was married 70 years to the late Leon B. Whipkey and was the daughter of the late Preston and Winnie Kerns Simmons of Petroleum, WV.

She is survived by her children, Garriel (Mollie) Whipkey of Tam Water, Washington, Merrill (Rosie) Whipkey of Wayne, West Virginia, Janice Jones of Pennsboro, West Virginia and Becky Nichols, with whom Nina resided for the past six years, of Parkersburg, West Virginia. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Thelma Lowe of Minnie Hamilton Long Term Care, Grantsville, WV; several nieces, nephews including greats and great-greats.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Wayne Jones; two grandchildren; a great grandson; sisters and brothers.

Nina was a member of the Auburn Baptist Church, Auburn, WV, where she served as Mission Chairman. She had served as Mission Chairman and as Youth Director for many years during her lifetime. She had attended the American Baptist Women's Conference at AB College in Philippi, WV for 27 years. She received her 50 year pin from the Order of the Eastern Star, Grantsville Chapter, in 2009, where she had served as Worthy Matron in 1972. She worked as a foster grandmother in the Calhoun County School system for 24 years, retiring in 2007.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at the Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville, with Rev. Harry Drake officiating. Burial will follow at the Nobe Cemetery. Viewing will be held at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, with an Order of the Eastern Star service held at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to The Gideon's International, The Ritchie-Doddridge Camp, c/o Mr. Robert Haught, 6508 Grove-Summers Road, West Union, WV 26456.
