STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ADDRESSING SEVERE POTHOLE PROBLEM

(03/27/2014)
West Virginia is a state that is about 15 years behind its' own repaving schedule, and the WV Legislature was unable to come up with a catch-up plan to improve the problem.

Now, following the hard winter, it's "pothole heaven" for both primary and secondary highways.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carrie Bly said the rough winter has caused an $11 million overrun in road maintenance costs.

The department budgeted just under $55 million for snow removal and related expenses, but this severe winter has ended up costing the department nearly $66 million.

The highway department is planning to move about $15 million from its contract paving budgets to help patch potholes around the state when the winter weather goes away.
