James E. Hardman, 86 - Grantsville

James E. Hardman, 86, of Grantsville, WV departed this life on March 13, 2014 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV following a brief illness.

James was born on November 15, 1927 in Grantsville, WV. He was the son of the late Gona and Ova Hinzman Hardman.

James graduated from Calhoun County High School and served in the United States Army from October 1950 through October 1952. During that time, he was a member of the 17th OCS Company and stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. He spent the rest of his career as a member of the West Virginia Pipe Trades Local 565 and worked throughout Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia before retiring in 1990.

James was actively involved in his community. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Grantsville, WV and he also volunteered for several years at the Calhoun County Committee on Aging. He enjoyed working at "the Center" and being a part of the kitchen crew. He loved daily interaction with others and could often be found about town, with a coffee cup in hand, telling someone a tall tale.

James is survived by his stepdaughter Jennifer (Richard) Morris; step grandchildren Elizabeth (Chris) O'Hara and Daniel (Amanda) Morris; step great grandchildren, James and Jack O'Hara and Levi and Cooper Morris; nieces Sandra (Tom) Rowell, Rosemary (Gary) Sherwood, Harriet (Mark) McCoy; nephew Harold (Mary) Proudfoot, and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife of 17 years, Bernice B. Yoke Hardman in 2008; his sisters Opal Proudfoot Hockey, Freda Buck, and Wilma Stump, and three infant siblings.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Calhoun County Committee on Aging, P. O. Box 619, Grantsville, WV.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, WV. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Grantsville, WV.
