County Clerk Jean Simers keeps running
numbers for public of levy vote

A small voter turn-out of 448 voters approved an Emergency Services and Criminal Justice Levy in an election held Saturday in Calhoun.

Calhoun Clerk Jean Simers said the initiative carried by 63.83%, with 60% needed for approval to renew the five-year levy, which did not raise taxes.

The levy carried in all Calhoun precincts, except Minnora, Orma and Arnoldsburg.

The levy supports funding for the county's three fire departments, the ambulance service, a deputy sheriff, and funds for have a full-time county prosecutor.

Voting yes 286. Voting no 162.

1. Brooksville: 29 yes, 15 no (65.90%)

4. Courthouse: 37 yes, 12 no (75.51%)

5. Big Springs: 31 yes, 18 no (63.26%)

6. Senior Center: 27 yes, 11 no (71.05%)

7. Grantsville VFD: 43 yes, 10 no (81.13%)

8. Pleasant Hill: 38 yes, 11 no (77.55%)

10. Arnoldsburg: 29 yes, 27 no (51.78%)

11. CMHS: 25 yes, 12 no (67.56%)

15. Orma: 14 yes, 17 no (45.16%)

19. Minnora: 13 yes, 29 no (30.95%)

In the previous levy conducted in 2008, the levy passed by 64.52%.

The levy was instituted a number of years ago because the county lacks the general tax funds to support such services.
