FLASHBACK GRANTSVILLE - Samuel And Rachel Weaver Barr Log House 1845

Photos courtesy of Donna Erlewine Samuel Barr was born in 1798 in Randolph County. He and his wife Rachel Weaver built this log cabin in 1845, several years before Calhoun was established and in what would become Grantsville many years later. The house occupied a site to the right of the Russett Road (town limits), across the road from the former Grantsville swimming pool. Samuel and Rachel may have more descendants in the county than other early settlers, having at least twelve children and 83 grandchildren. Both Samuel and his wife died during the Civil War. Among the early descendants in the county, Chenoweth, Stemple, Vannoy, Proudfoot, Robinson, Stump, Hathaway, Poling, Weaver, Barr and Westfall. Now, there are many others Shown in the photographs, standing in the yard, Dora Harris Plant; standing in the doorway of the other photo, Elizabeth Harris, whose maiden name was Smith, married a Barr and then a Harris. The log house was likely standing into the 1960's, a life of well over 100 years for the cabin.
