Robert W. Thorn 83 - Elizabeth

Robert W. Thorn 83, of Elizabeth, WV passed away Saturday January 4, 2014 at Camden Clark Memorial Campus.

He was born January 27, 1930 the son of the late Claude and Thelma (Parsons) Thorn.

He was a 1948 graduate of Wirt County High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked for several years at Sims and George Store of Elizabeth until it closed in September of 1979, he then worked for a few years for Midland Grocery in Vienna before he became the Assessor of Wirt County, he served from 1980 until his retirement in 1997. After a few years he joined the staff of Matheny Funeral Home, of Elizabeth.

He was an active member for over 50 years to both the Wirt County Masonic Lodge #82 and Wirt Eastern Stars #113. He was a member of the Elizabeth VFW for several years, and attended Buffalo Church and was on the Committee that assisted in the Restoration of the Church. He enjoyed hunting, and spending time on his family farm in Mayberry WV. Bill loved spending his afternoons on his front porch, watching the neighborhood he dearly loved and always had a friendly wave to those who passed by.

He is survived by 5 brothers, Cloyd (Bobbie) Thorn of Davisville WV, Roger (Nancy) Thorn of Hoppeston IL, Charles Thorn of Grandforks ND, Claude Clark (Mary) Thorn of Warrenrobbins GA, and Ronnie (Cookie) Thorn of Hoppeston IL; 2 sisters, Pauline Lockhart of Parkersburg WV and Mary (John) Thatcher of Henning IL; sister-in-law, Carolyn Thorn of Elizabeth; and a special niece, Becky Thorn of Belpre Ohio; 20 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Carl Thorn and George Thorn and one nephew.

Funeral service will be Friday, January 10, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Matheny Whited Funeral Home of Elizabeth WV, with Rev. Lee Williams and Pastor Dave Morris officiating, with Military and Masonic Graveside Rites at K of P Cemetery of Elizabeth WV. Visitation will be Thursday January 9, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. with an Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
