120-YEAR-OLD INCANDESCENT LIGHTBULBS ENDING JAN. 1

(12/26/2013)
The 120-year incandescent light bulb, whether it was Thomas Edison or Heinrich Gobel who invented them, will fade from the American landscape on Jan. 1, no longer to be produced.

The government has declared the inefficient and energy draining bulbs to be discontinued, with tens of millions manufactured each year.

Stores will be selling the last of the bulbs in stock.

The U.S. lighting industry is trying to persuade consumers to purchase light emitting diode bulbs, known as LEDs. The industry's goal is to replace incandescent bulbs with halogen, fluorescent and LED bulbs.

While they are significantly more expensive than the traditional incandescent bulbs, they are said save energy and are a cost savings over the long run.
