WOMAN WHO RAN OVER SGT. NICHOLS GIVEN PRISON SENTENCE

(12/10/2013)
Jennifer Elaine Garretson was sentenced to 2 to 10 years in prison after running over a West Virginia State Police officer who attempted to stop her after she shoplifted at Goody's Department Store in St. Albans.

Garretson will be eligible for parole in seven months.

Sgt. Aaron Nichols, who was off-duty at the time, ran after Garretson as she fled to her vehicle in the parking lot. When the officer tried walking behind the car, Garretson threw the vehicle in reverse, according to court documents, severely injuring him.

Garretson surrendered to authorities two days later and she was charged with malicious wounding.

Sgt. Nichols spent almost a month at Charleston Area Medical Center and suffered from severe head trauma. He lost his ability to taste and smell and now wears a hearing aid after a hearing loss.

He is currently serving light duty at the South Charleston detachment, but he hopes to return to return to regular duty.

Nichols, a native of Clay County, served at the Wirt County detachment.
