Ellen L. Reed, 55 - Spencer

Ellen L. Reed, 55, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2013, at home.

She was born November 4, 1958, in Dunkirk, NY, a daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Terry Johnston of Summerfield, FL.

Ellen was a 34 year employee of the Roane County Board of Education. After graduating from Edinboro University, Edinboro, PA, she came to Roane County to start a pre-school program for the handicapped children of the county. Most recently, she had been a second grade teacher at Spencer Elementary School.

She was an active member of the St. Johns UMC, where she was also a member of the choir and Sunday school teacher. Ellen enjoyed reading her Bible, spiritual books, baseball and walking. She especially enjoyed watching her family and students play baseball, basketball and other sports.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband of 27 years, Charles D. Reed; two sons, Zachary Reed of Baltimore, MD and Jared Reed of Spencer; brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Debbie Johnston of Grand Island, NY; sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Johnston and Greg Torchio of Centreville, MD, Terry Johnston and Joe Oswald of Madison, WI; maternal grandmother, Josephine Terry of Richmond, VA; mother-in-law, Mary Reed of Spencer; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky and Ed Golden of Reedy WV; nieces and nephews, Julia, Peter, Jackie, Tim and Gabe Johnston, Giovanna, Gresson, Lou and Lillia Torchio, Noah Oswald, Sarah and Travis Helbig, Avery and Archer Helbig.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 12 in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Michael Ludle, the Rev. Larry Greathouse and Charles White officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer. Friends may call from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial donations are preferred to the Gideons or the Roane County Library.
