HUMAN INFECTION OF WEST NILE REPORTED IN OHIO - First Case In That State, Second WV Horse Infected

A 26-year-old Columbus, Ohio resident has been released from a hospital with a confirmed case of West Nile Virus. Ohio joins three other adjoining states to have positive human cases, Kentucky, Maryland and Virginia.

A second horse in West Virginia has been confirmed with the virus and has died in Cabel County. Another horse with the disease is alive in Mercer County.

At least 20 counties in West Virginia have confirmed dead birds.

West Nile is spread directly to humans by mosquito bites.

A human case is yet to be reported in West Virginia.
