CMS Volleyball week 3 round up

The Calhoun Middle School Lady Red Devils faced a tough competition to start out the week facing Braxton County. The B team came up short with Braxton handing Calhoun their first loss of the season with final scores of 25-7 and 25-9. The players were faced with very experienced players and hard to handle serves. In both sets, however, Calhoun managed to cover the court well and kept their effort going from start to finish.

In the A game, the Devils tried to make the game competitive, but ended up losing to Braxton in the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-12. Braxton gave up 16 rally points in these sets, this is a direct result of great communication and discipline from the Calhoun Red Devils of knowing the rules of the game.

Coming back after a tough Braxton game, the CMS volleyball team travelled to Spencer and bounced back tremendously from Tuesday's performance. The B team had an impressive first set win ending 25-10. Paige Mangus accounted for 15 points, 6 of these being aces. In the second set, Brandee Allen, Alison Dennis, and Megan Harding had a combined effort score of 17 points to boost the Devils on top of Spencer with a final score, 25-21.

Later in the evening, the A team faced Spencer and unfortunately came up short in both sets to the Yellowjackets, 25-16 and 25-22. The ladies made Spencer work for their points though and tried all evening to get the points needed for their team. Overall, the CMS B Team moves to 5-1 and the A team is now 0-6 on the season.

CMS Volleyball Week 4 update

Calhoun Middle School Lady Red Devils started off this week with tough competition against Wirt County. Both A and B teams struggled against the powerhouse of servers and attackers of Wirt County. The B team experienced their second loss of the season falling to Wirt 14-25 in both sets. The points were scored in an all-around effort by the players, but unfortunately their efforts came up short. As for the A game, the CMS Devils took on the Tigers, and also experienced a loss for the night. The scores of the first two sets favored Wirt 15-25 and 11-25.

Game two of the week was in neighboring Clay County on Tuesday night. The B team began with two nail biting wins of 25-20 and 25-23. The team started with big leads in both sets, but let the Lady Mustangs inch their way back slowly. Mel Starcher was the leading scorer for the night on the B team with a total of 22 points between both sets, and 8 aces on the night.

The A team finished up the evening with a very disciplined game. Receiving many points due to net violations, the Red Devils stayed in both games, but came up short to Clay losing 25-17 and 25-19. Shaylah Wilson and Cameron Smith shared 6 points for the night with their back row and front row rotation. Aaliyah Falls and Brogan Richards chipped in 6 points each for the ladies on the night.

The CMS Red Devils finished up the week with a home game against Summersville on Thursday October 3, 2013. This was the first time the team has faced Summersville and the B team was ready to handle the Bears. The B team began the night with Josey Manns leading the way in the first set, accounting for 10 of the teams points, 5 of them aces, in the team's 25-19 victory. In set 2, Mel Starcher and Brandee Allen chipped in 6 points each to lift the Devils past the Bears 25-18. The A team took the court later that night and came up short in the first two sets, handing Summersville the win 25-17 and 25-15. The Red Devils played the net well and tried to chip their way back in the game but the victory got away from them.

The B team improves to 6-2 on the season while the A team is now 0-8.

The Red Devils will travel to Geary on Tuesday October 8th and then are home against Braxton on Thursday October 10th. Come out and support your CMS Lady Red Devils.
