LESS THAN 50% WV STUDENTS HIT MATH, READING MARKS

Less than 30 percent of West Virginia's public schools were put in the highest category of the state Department of Education's new accountability system, as fewer than half of all students hit proficiency marks on standardized tests.

According to results from the annual WESTEST 2 released Wednesday, 49 percent of the state's students are proficient in reading -- an increase of 1 percent from the previous year. About 46 percent are proficient in math, a decrease of 1 percent.

However, new data reveals that, of those students who met proficient levels in reading, 30 percent are not keeping up with "growth expectations" -- meaning they aren't increasing their performance at the level they should be....
