ROANE OPEN DUMP IS CLEANED - Sixty Tons Removed

(08/31/2002)
Nearly 60 tons of trash and debris have been removed from an illegal tire dump near Billings in Roane County.

The Department of Environmental Protection removed 750 tires, two cars, 25 appliances and other junk from a two acre site on Cranenest Run.

It was part of a $1.3 million dollar program used to clean-up more than 854 open dumps around the state.

Greg Rote, director of the agency's Pollution and Open Dump Program, said many of the sites get polluted. The agency acts upon citizen's requests.

Since 1989 the program has cleaned 6,600 open dumps.
