Students and faculty of the Charleston based Academy of Arts at
January's will return to Heartwood for a day long workshop in
October with Heartwood Artistic Director Jude Binder. Dance
classes with Jude Binder are now open for enrollment for the Fall

Children, teens, adults and seniors are invited to enroll in Heartwood in the Hills' Fall Program of Classes which will begin the week of Sept. 8 and run for 12-weeks. Classes in dance, movement, art and maskmaking are offered on a weekly basis.

Classes offered include Introduction to Dance and theatre, Ballet, Dance Technique, Theatre Dance, Movement for Health and Centering, Artwork for Kids and Maskmaking.

Heartwood invites new and returning students to join the Performing Arts Program which is open to boys and girls, ages 10 and up. Students of this program will be welcomed at a mandatory orientation gathering on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at Heartwood.

BALLET 1 - Ages 10 and up. Introduction to basic principles of Classical Ballet. This is a required class for students in the Performing Arts Program. Students in Ballet 1 will attend the Theatre Dance 1 class on Thursday. Instructor Jude Binder. 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Fee - $60.00


INTRODUCTION TO DANCE and THEATRE - Ages 7 and up. Introduction to the fundamentals of dance. Emphasis will be on the elements of dance, improving strength and flexibility, and increasing dance vocabulary. Students will have the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity through various dance games and activities. They will bring a story book to life through creative play, improvisation and movement exercises. Instructor Amy Nicholas. 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Fee - $40.00 plus $10.00 materials fee.

DANCE TECHNIQUE - Modern, Caribbean, Ballet, International Folk Dance. Instructor Jude Binder. 6:30 - 8:15 p.m. Fee - $70.00


ARTWORK FOR KIDS - Ages 8 and up. Lessons in symmetry, color, design and conservation education. Instructor Jude Binder. 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Fee - $40.00 plus $10.00 materials fee.

MOVEMENT FOR HEALTH AND CENTERING - Teens, adults and seniors. Learn to move comfortably. Previous dance experience not required. Instructor Jude Binder. 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. Fee - $70.00


THEATRE DANCE I - Ages 10 and up. Studies in balance, coordination, rhythm, and movement including elements of ballet and modern dance to prepare the student for work on the stage. This is a required class for students in the Performing Arts Program. Students in Theatre Dance 1 will attend the Ballet 1 class on Monday. Instructor Jude Binder. 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Fee - $60.00

INTERMEDIATE BALLET - Teens, Adults and Seniors. Previous Ballet experience required. Instructor Jude Binder. 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. Fee - $70.00


MASKMAKING - Teens, adults and seniors. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult helper. Students will be guided through the process of creating tarlatan masks as seen in Heartwood productions. Instructor Jude Binder. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class length may vary. Fee - $75.00 plus $15.00 materials fee.

Heartwood is a non-profit school for the arts located off Route 16 North of Grantsville on Broomstick Road off Lovada Road in Five Forks.
