Alan Roy McClain, 68 - Spencer

Alan Roy McClain, 68, of Spencer, West Virginia, passed away Monday August 19, 2013 in the CAMC-Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after an extended illness.

He was born August 13, 1945 in Spencer, a son of the late John Henry and Leona Helen Tawney McClain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen, Farrell and David McClain; and three step children, Kenny, Raymond and Sharon Pauley.

Survivors include his former wife and best friend, Rhonda Carper McClain of Amma; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Buffy Hawkins of Columbus, OH; daughters and sons-in-law, Yvette and Patrick Brick of Elizabeth, Amanda and Josh White of Walton; fifteen grandchildren, Amanda Baurele, Shawn Meyers, Samantha, Katie and Elizabeth Hawkins, Hope and Patrick Brick, Chase, Cody and Caden White, Michael Pauley, Courtney Beezel and Whitney Pauley, Amber and Josh Pauley; seven great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, John L. and Joyce McClain of Aiken, SC, Edward B. and Barbara McClain of Spencer; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol Cronin of Spencer, Dianne Short and Roma also of Spencer, Kathy McClain-Popp and Michael of Hurricane; two special nieces, Deborah and Kevin Pennell of San Antonio, TX and Patti Ann and Bill Jenson of Missouri.

Alan served in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam War from August 10, 1965 until January 8, 1969. He was employed for several years as a heavy equipment operator for the coal mines, before becoming an over the road truck driver from 1983 until his retirement in 1998.

The family will receive friends at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, on Friday, August 23 from 5-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, August 24 at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Ronald W. Fisher officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Zion Hill Cemetery, Elana, at a later date.
