CLAY COMMISSION EXPECTING SHERIFF SLACK TO RESIGN - Thirteen Clay Residents Interested In Job

(08/15/2013)
Clay Commission President Mike Pierson says the county expects Sheriff Miles "Mike" Slack will resign from his post, but said in a commission meeting he didn't know the time frame.

Slack was indicted by a federal court for illegally wiretapping his ex-wife's computer, a Clay County magistrate's clerk, which is linked to a system which is under the jurisdiction of the WV Supreme Court.

The commission said when they receive Slack's resignation, the county will follow state code and appoint a sheriff from Slack's political party, Slack is a Democrat.

Lots of Clay residents are interested in the job, commissioner Pierson said they have had 13 people interested.

Once a sheriff is named, that person will serve until next year when an election is scheduled.

Commissioners indicated they may appoint the county's Chief Tax Deputy as a temporary sheriff for no more than 30 days to make sure checks can be signed and other matters are taken care of during the transition.

Commissioners said the Democrat Party has made three recommendations for the position.
