(07/31/2013)
A correctional officer at the Gilmer Federal Corrections Institution has pleaded guilty to federal charges of taking about $40,000 for tobacco he smuggled to prisoners at the facilty just east of Glenville.

Jason Noel Squires, 28 pleaded guilty to felony charges, conspiracy to bribe public officials, and aiding and abetting bribery of a public official.

His girlfriend, Nikole Monique Watkins, 24, also pleaded to the same charges.

US District prosecutors say that Squires smuggled tobacco into the prison for inmates in 2012.

The deal allegedly involved inmates having contacts outside the prison who sent money to Watkins.

U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley will sentence the pair. They face up to 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

They are currently free on bond.
