State Police in Clay County shot and killed a man Wednesday morning after he pointed a rifle at officers who entered his house to serve a federal search warrant.

Dead is Richard Dale Kohler, 66, of Laurel Ridge Road in Maysel.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous said a special response team and federal Drug Enforcement Agency agents knocked on Kohler's door and when no one answered, officers "had to break down the door or forcefully open it somehow."

Kohler was pointing a rifle at the officers, Baylous said.

Troopers fired multiple shots fired, killing Kohler.

It was not clear that Kohler had fired his rifle.

Baylous said the warrant was part of a larger, ongoing drug investigation with more than one suspect, focused on prescription drugs.
