UPDATE: BAN LIFTED AFTER TOXIC ALGAE DISCOVERED AT SUTTON LAKE

(06/29/2013)
UPDATE - The Army Corps of Engineers announced Friday it has re-opened a beach at Sutton Lake after a potentially harmful bloom of blue-green algae has reportedly dissipated.

No swimming signs were posted at the lake after the bloom was discovered.

The Corps said visitors are no longer discouraged from contact with the water, although posters will remain in place through July 8 advising people to exercise caution and avoid areas with blue-green algae.

UPDATE - Sutton area businesses say there is an over-reaction to a media release by the US Army Corp of Engineers about toxic algae discovered in areas of Sutton Dam Lake.

The businesses say that many people have quit coming to the lake.

The U.S. Army Corps started increasing the outflow at Sutton Dam in an attempt to reduce the growth of potentially toxic algae.

Angered businesses say that the lakes facilities are open, and blame the negative reaction to the algae on social media.

ORIGINAL STORY -Sutton Lake is closing a swimming area at the lake to protect public health.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a press release Sunday saying parts of the lake are being closed because of a toxin produced by a blue-green algae bloom that can be harmful to health.

The swimming area at the lake's south abutment is closed.

Posters are cautioning boaters and swimmers about the bloom's potential health risks at all access points to the lake.

The Corps says they are monitoring water quality and are patrolling the lake by boat to look for signs of algae.
