DESPITE LOSS CALHOUN RED'S FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT |

By Gaylen Duskey realfang@citlink.net One could forgive Calhoun Reds Coach John Persinger if he's thinking the future is so bright he's got to wear shades because after Tuesday's 22-15 loss to Roane County it sure looks that way. Despite the come-from-behind victory for Roane, next year's Calhoun team looks pretty solid. That glance into the future came because the Reds played the game without all but one of their eighth grade players. Most of the eighth graders were in Washington, D.C., on a school-sponsored trip and weren't available for action. The only eighth grader on the roster for the Reds was third baseman Chandler Newell. The Reds came out with their hitting shoes on while belting out 13 hits. Ben Frederick led the way with a four-for-four day that included a double and four runs-batted-in. Soney Wilson added three hits and an RBI, Chandler Newell and Caden Hicks both had two hits and two RBIs, Eli Stump had a hit and an RBI and Jordan Basnett added a hit. Despite going hitless Trent Church, Austin Hicks and Caleb Nicholas all added RBIs. Nicholas got his on one of two times he was hit by a pitch. Calhoun jumped on top of Roane with an eight-run first inning that saw 11 batters go to the plate. But that 8-2 lead was the high water mark for the Reds. Roane kept chipping away and with a five-run third had the lead 9-8. But the Reds had one more comeback in them and scored four in the bottom of the third before Roane brought in Drew Kinder to pitch and Kinder held Calhoun to three runs the rest of the way. Kinder was also the hitting star for Roane with a home run, triple and two singles and five runs-batted-in. On Sunday the Reds dropped a doubleheader to Parkersburg South 18-1 and 11-0, both games being called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Calhoun returns to action Thursday night at home against Ritchie County. The game was originally scheduled to be in the road but was changed to Mount Zion to facilitate activities at Ritchie County High School. Game time is 6 p.m. It is the last regular season game for the Reds.
