HELP NEEDED FOR WAYNE UNDERWOOD FIELD - Area Will Be Developed, Scheduling System Started

(08/15/2002)
Calhoun Commission President Larry McCallister said parents and citizens will be asked for help to develop and maintain Wayne Underwood Field as an ongoing recreational area for the county.

"Finances are in short supply, so labor may be part of the contribution," he said. "We have to come up with funding to pay for lighting and water," and some of the bare essentials.

"We will make the field available to athletic or other groups who want to use it for sports, recreation and gatherings," said McCallister. "During the next few months we will be developing a plan, which includes community involvement."

The field needs rest rooms, bleachers and a snack bar, among other things, but new projects will be considered.

Randy Durst of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council will be in Grantsville this week to help design a plan for the complex, which could include a walking trail and boat dock.

Commissioner Bob Weaver is applying for some grant money for improvements and development of the area.

McCallister, who was just elected to the Board of the West Virginia County Commissioner's Association, said the project will be under the supervision of the county's Park and Recreation Commission.

All scheduling for the field will be handled by volunteer Cheryl McCallister (304-354-6894) of the park board. Groups currently using the field or who want to use the field should contact Cheryl for scheduling.
