HEARTWOOD ARTISTS HAVE SPECIAL GUEST - Artist Gideon Kendall Returns

Students of Heartwood in the Hills Artwork for Kids class enjoyed a presentation by artist Gideon Kendall on Wednesday, March 27, 2013. The class also included an exhibit of the original illustrations for the book "Dino Pets".

Gideon attended Calhoun County schools in the 1970's-80's. He graduated from The Cooper Union School for Science and Art in New York with a BFA in 1989. For the past 15 years he has been working as an artist, illustrator, animation designer, and musician in Brooklyn, New York. In 2001 Gideon published his first children's book; "Little Bats Halloween Story" written by Diane Mayr and published by Albert Whitman & Co. His other books for children include "Dino Pets" by Lynn Plourde (Dutton, summer 2007).

He is currently working as an illustrator for "Highlights" magazine. Gideon and his wife, artist Julie Peppito, have been guest artists at Heartwood over the years and have also performed in a number of Heartwood productions. The Kendalls reside in Brooklyn, NY with their son, Milo. Gideon is the son of Heartwood Artistic Director Jude Binder and Heartwood co-founder Frank Venezia.

Artwork for Kids is a weekly class for children and teens ages 8 and up. The hour long class begins with a discussion about the principles of artwork. Students work at their tables in the Sidney Binder Memorial Art Building for 50 minutes and then come back together for a wrap-up discussion.

Lessons include study in symmetry, color, design and conservation education.. Enrollment for the Spring 2013 class is closed. Anyone interested in enrollment for the Fall Program us as soon as possible as the class will fill very quickly.
