Nelson Edward Garrett, 93, of Cox's Mill

Nelson Edward Garrett, 93, of Cox's Mill, West Virginia departed this life at 12:13 a.m., Saturday March 23, 2013 in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston, West Virginia following an brief illness.

Born November 5, 1919 in Gilmer County, West Virginia, son of the late Richard Earl and Opal Hall Garrett.

Nelson was a graduate of Troy High School, and attended 2 years at the Mountain State Business College at Parkersburg, West Virginia.

He was longtime farmer and cattleman, member of the Gilmer County Farm Bureau, he was actively involved with the youth at the farm shows, enjoyed discussing cattle with them, and encouraging young farmers through the FFA. Nelson was a Gilmer County Commissioner for 18 years and attended the Troy Baptist Church.

On October 5, 1946 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Cooper Garrett, who survives at their Cox's Mill home.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Susan Messenger and husband John of Glenville, West Virginia, and Nancy L. Harold and husband William of Alexandria, Virginia. There are 3 grandchildren, Angie Volk, Greg Messenger and Amber Wright, and 5 great-grandchildren, Garrett Volk, Lauren Volk, Tiarra Thornton, Emma Wright, and Andrew Wright also surviving.

Nelson was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Melvin, Elvin, and Jack Garrett, and 1 sister Glo Woofter.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV., 26351 at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 with Rev. Gene Johnson and Rev. Jim Ballinger officiating.

Burial will follow in the Weston Masonic Cemetery, Weston, West Virginia.

Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gilmer County 4-H, FFA, and Farm Bureau.
