West Virginia is among the highest ranking states with nicotine addiction.

A released county-by-county study of adult smoking says up to 43% of Calhoun adults smoke, with a state-wide average at 26%, according to to rankings from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Other studies say 32% of Calhoun residents smoke.

A federal study says Kentucky and West Virginia have the highest death rates from smoking in the USA.

In 2005, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services, Calhoun ranked eleventh in the state with smoking deaths.

A Pride Survey done at Calhoun Middle-High School in 2008, over 50% of all CM-HS School students surveyed say they used tobacco during the past year.

In that study, using tobacco weekly, the highest averages was in grades 11-12 with 42-45%, with 23-32% of students in grades 7-9.

In more recent state-wide studies, the number of young people using tobacco products has declined.
